The day before the fire I woke up and on impulse decided that \u0026quot;Today is the day I am going to drive to Exeter and see where my ancestors had their coachworks for myself.\u0026quot; I found North Street where they lived and the roads and got an idea of the size of the place by walking around the roads it bordered.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EI was really surprised how near the Cathedral was to everything and ended up in a cafe opposite the cathedral looking at that and speculating whether my ancestors must have walked past this and the Clarence hotel to get to their coachworks. I had never heard of the Clarence Hotel.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EI don\u0026#39;t think they would have used any other route. While I had my tea outside a very old building, I was imagining my ancestors walking by the hotel and wondered if they ever used it. \u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EI guess I sort of understood why anyone would want to live in Exeter! I looked at the Clarence hotel and wondered about going in. To my regret, I did not.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EI saw the hotel the day before it burned down and at least got to see something of what my ancestors would have seen. I cannot find the link,  but this was in the Exeter Flying Post. It was sold by my Great Great Great Grandfather (John Alexander Sellers) after his son died in 1876. (also John Alexander Sellers) My great, great Grandfather was too young to run a coachworks so effectively no heir was left to carry the business on. He died in 1879 and my great grandfatheoubr (John Alexander Rounsiful Sellers) was able to live  as a gentleman of independent means until the money ran out. I am still trying to work out the position of the coachworks as it also fronted or backed onto Bedford and Catherine Street and possibly Egypt Lane and may even have been visible from the High Street (where Ann Sellers kept a baby linen warehouse (originally in North Street.) Would this confirm the site of the stabling?\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EOdd to think part of the family fortune, before my great grandfather drank it away (or so family tradition has it,)  was realised by the sale of the New London Inn! I will post back when I find the other information I have.
